“A SUMMER SWIM”

By

Mildred Hernandez

How dare he put me in this compromising situation, and then threaten to kill my husband if I broke up with him!  The affair with Mr. pompous behind Jerry Spears is over!  He doesn’t own me!  I don’t care how mad he is, he better get it through that thick skull of his that this will be the last time he sees me!  Where did he disappear to anyway!  Yeah, he needs to take his overweight body for a walk!

I got up and entered the water, and found it to be so relaxing!  Diving beneath the waves is a favorite of mine!  I can be at peace!  It’s so serene!

“My God, what was that”, I thought alarmingly, as something brush against my feet!  Something large and solid!  Definitely not a sea weed!  I felt it again and dove to investigate it!  To my horror, I looked into the opened eyes of my dead husband, floating just beneath the surface!  Swimming as fast as I could, I returned to the beach, and didn’t stop until I was in the car!  I reached quickly beneath my seat and grabbed the small caliber revolver I always carried with me!

“So”, I thought!  “He really did carry out his threat!  Well we’ll see who laughs last!”

I was startled when Jerry ran up to the car, breathing hard, with a grin on his face!  He didn’t wear it for long.  The grin turned to shock, when I aimed the gun at him and pulled the trigger!  He fell to the ground and I quickly changed seats, and got behind the wheel and started the car!  I was just about to shift gears, when I was startled once again!  The passenger door jerked open, and to my shock and horror my husband climbed into the car!

“But how can this be”, I thought!  “I saw him dead in the water!

He simply looked at me and smiled, and said, “Hello darling!  Nice job!  Now can we get on with our lives?

The End
